(I have asked permission to join, my apologies for posting so late.)
Christina raced down the hallways, her heels clicking out a staccato beat against the stone as she ran through the thinning crowd of students. It was nearly time for class and she only had a minute to spare until it started. Gasping for breath as she ran she cursed her choice in shoes and mumbled in a frustrated tone. “I can’t believe I’m going to be late, she’ll have my head for certain!” Professor McGonagall had earned her reputation as the hard nosed Gryffindor Head of house and considering the students she had to deal with it was little wonder she was so stringent. But she knew if she didn’t hurry and get to class she’d be lectured, have points taken or worse… and she didn’t want to consider what the worst would be. Clutching her satchel at her hip she turned a corner quickly and rushed towards the Transfiguration classroom, she was almost there! As she reached the doorway she slowed down to a calm pace, took a deep breath and ran her fingers through her hair before she walked inside. It was a good thing she hadn’t come in running because she surely would have knocked into something. Today just seemed full of surprises and this one made her quite curious, in six years of transfiguration she had never came in to find the class like this. Their professor must have something up her sleeve today. Pausing for just a moment to let her eyes adjust, she looked around to see that most of the class had already taken their seats. She walked down the aisle quietly, as not to attract any more attention to her entrance and sat a two rows behind Yulia… or at least that’s who she assumed it was. It was rather hard to tell in the dark. Evidently she was just in time, no sooner had she set down her book bag down than McGonagall had raised her wand and locked the door. Christina wished that she had used a spell that was a little easier on the ears as this one screeched unpleasantly. She listened to their professor speak with piqued curiosity, for while she was the Gryffindor head of house, McGonagall was also extremely intelligent and skilled. Only a fool would let any wisdom she handed out fall past them, especially considering that today’s lesson was very practical. Christina stood up, grateful that she would be able to pick her group today instead of being thrown together with just anyone. Her gaze wandered across the room, looking at each pair as she tried to decide who would best compliment her. Vile and Vandrake were out of the question, as was Yulia and Toft’s group. Marcus didn’t seem the kind to take this class seriously and Yulia would most likely end up killing Michael before class ended. This left only one option, Draco and Alexander. Walking down the aisle to join Malfoy, and eventually Alex as well, she shot Yulia a smug little grin. She would be paired with the two most handsome guys in the class and Alexander was one of the most skilled students in Transfiguration, how lucky could one girl get? Perhaps fate was trying to make up for the horrible time she had getting here. I shouldn’t get to far ahead of myself. She chided herself. I haven’t even asked them if I could work with them. Though she doubted that they would have any problem with that, she didn’t want to come off as arrogant or conceited. So when she reached Malfoy she smiled sweetly and made her wishes known. “Draco, would you mind if I join you and Alexander today?” While she waited for his reply she heard Marcus’s bumbling and slightly haughty answer. Her hand rested on her hip as she thought over the question out loud. “Something out of nothing? That’s impossible, to transfigure something first there must be something to transform… even if it’s just atoms your working with.”

>"Colloportus!"
Alex was very surprised as the professor spoke and locked the door. He had never been to a Transfiguration class like this before, and this was the class he accelerated at the most. Alex knew whatever it was she was getting ready to teach them, it would be for their safety in the future. It seemed like she was talking around the issue she really wanted to gun at, so it must have been something that Headmaster Snape and the Ministry would disapprove of. This must be important.
Alex listened to her talk about Transfiguration being used as offense and defense. He knew somewhat of what she was talking about, but it was really hard and you had to think quick. He thought hard about the question that she asked. He had an idea of what the answer may be, but he didn't want to misspeak and get points taken off his house or get in trouble. Everyone's time would come. Then, they were asked to pair up, and his partner would be Draco Malfoy. He moved to where Draco was because he was more convenient to get to. He whispered softly, "Hey Draco." And shortly after Christina made her way over. "Hey Christina."
Marcus then began to answer. Alex subtly put his hand over his mouth. He could not believe that Marcus would try to push this subject to charms, especially when he knew personally McGonagall thought charms was for idiots who couldn't perform Transfiguration. He chuckled softly, surely McGonagall would go for blood.

Draco gave Yulia a nod of recognition as she sat down beside of him. He didn't speak perhaps because this didn't seem the right environment to. McGonagall was up to something, that was sure and Draco was ready to see whether it would be worth the time invested in this class or not.
A few more students came in and though Draco paid little or no attention to them he couldn't help but roll his eyes a little as Michael Toft was tripping over words talking to the teal haired girl. Here he was seventeen years old and he still couldn't manage to get a good coherent sentence out when speaking to the opposite sex. Well if she was desperate enough to give this bloak a chance, well then she was just as hopeless as he was.
When McGonagall spoke up Draco gave her his attention, more so than usual because the way she was rambling on saying this could be used offensively. Perhaps the old hag was really going to show them something useful. Draco's eyes narrowed in thought as she split them up into pairs, sending poor Yulia off with the worst choice in this class. Draco shot her a glance with a look of understanding that something was about to happen. If McGonagall couldn't keep the attention and respect of the class, well perhaps Yulia would finish what Michael ran away from in the first place.
Alexander. Things could have been a lot worse. In fact he'd rather partner up with the Ravenclaw more than anyone else outside of his house. His grey eyes drifted the boys way as he made his way over to him and sat down, giving him a small greeting. Draco nodded his head to Alex, leaning in to make a slight joke. "Does that charm work on the teachers?" But then Christina's soft voice tore at his thoughts. He looked at her as she asked to join the group, surely she knew that Draco wouldn't deny her this. And he didn't give Alex a moment to try to deny her. "Don't mind at all.", Draco quickly replied. At least he was partnered up with Christina, which meant he would really have to apply himself to this lesson. Alex was already the pick of the class so they should all make good marks, if the Professor was even grading them today.
Then it seemed that Christina couldn't sit idly by while Marcus attempted to answer the Professors question. Draco didn't know the answer either, after all they had been taught to turn one object into another over the years, never making something appear out of thin air. Her answer sounded quiet 'matter of factly' and perhaps McGonagall would take points off ... But she shouldn't. If the old woman had failed to teach them something like this before then she should find her own self at fault for her lack of teaching. Now Draco's eyes slipped from Christina and her porcelain features to the witch standing in front of the class.

Minerva wasn't usually this bold and defiant when it came to school politics and politics in general. She had really no respect for any of the wizarding politicians who spoke of what they were going to do, not do, whatever, she just wanted no part in it. But, she thrusted herself into the dead middle of it if it affected her students. And the prospects of the Ministry protecting the students from a Death Eater assault or just a rouge assault was very low. They were too busy playing politics, trying to fool the community that the Ministry was an independent body doing what was right for the wizarding community. Rubbish!
She watched how the students took her 'lecture'. She wasn't doing this to be the 'cool' teacher or the defiant rule breaker, she was doing it to save them. The Ravenclaws and the Hufflepuffs in the classroom looked as if they genuinely took to heart what she said and understood her intentions, while the Slytherin's she still wasn't so sure of. Regardless, loyal to her or not, they were her students to, and if need be she'd fight for them and give them a fighting chance.
She watched as they paired up. Some looked happier than others, but they'd have to get over it and work together. Everyone was so separated and concerned with what side they were on they forgot what the common good was. This would be one of the most memorable Transfiguration lessons that they'd have. "Good, good." She said assertively as the groups were finally paired and situated. She listened as Marcus tried to answer her question.
>"Is that possible? Isn't Transfiguration about transforming things, not--summoning objects? That sounds like it falls under the topic of Charms--but sorry Professor, I'm not sure what you mean,"
She quirked her right eye brow, his answer aggravated her, but she didn't expect the students to know. " I was explicitly clear in what I meant Mr. Vile, I have no doubt about that." She snapped and moved closer to the students, still looking at Marcus. "If this were Charms, Professor Flitwick would be in here." She took a pause, lessoning her tone a little. "Where as in Charms when you create something, let it be a living being or a non-living being, it is permanent until removed and if you were to summon something it would have to of already existed. When Transfiguring something, depending on the conditions, the effort put forth, your strength and talent in the art, the item transfigured will not last. Does this make sense, or does somebody not understand?" Think of it as a temporary defensive barricade or an offensive item. She shifted her gaze first to Draco's group, then to Yulia's group, and stopped on Marcus' group again "Nice thinking though Mr. Vile, " she grinned, "10 points to Hufflepuff for your attempt.". She hoped this answered his question, but she over heard Ms. Beaufort's answer and Minerva never liked her knowledge of Transfiguration being held in contempt.
She turned to Christina. "Transfiguring nothing into something is not impossible just as transfiguring something into nothing is not." She said in a sharp tone. "This is going to confuse many of you, but bear with me. Think about this. Nothing is something that can be changed to fill the void, just as an object can be changed. To do this takes practice and tremendous focus. Only a handful of even adult wizards can perfect this art, if it makes you feel better, not even Headmaster Snape has yet accomplish this..." She had to take a shot even though she shouldn't have. "But, if you're not skilled enough, and you want to give the illusion of transfiguring something out of nothing, focus on dust particles or elements that cannot be seen and you will accomplish your means."
Now she was going to explain to them the purpose of even wanting to do this. "The reason I'm teaching you this, is so that you will be able to use this to your advantage if a dark wizard or witch attacks you. You could launch a statue to throw them off guard or create a wardrobe to take a curse if you cannot avoid it. We're going to do an example, who will be my guinea pig?" She looked around. She spotted her target and pointed with a smile on her face. "Mr. Malfoy, would you do the honors. I want you to come up here, and launch a curse of your choice at me when you're ready, but beware, expect retaliation in the form of Transfiguration After this, the class will practice with one another until you have it down. Then you are to call me over to witness it, and we'll move on. Mr. Malfoy, are you coming?" She said in a shrude tone. She knew Draco would love to shoot a curse at her, the Head of the Gryffindor House and get away with it.

((ooc: Nothing really to respond to here. Just posting so my next one won't be too long.)) Draco, was a natural born leader and always assumed that position in any circumstance. Like in this instance where he so kindly accepted her into their group before Alex even had a chance to respond or object. Not that it would matter much if he had, she would have just ignored him and continued working with Malfoy but luckily that hadn’t been an issue. Christina nodded and sat next to him because it seemed McGonagall’s lecture might last a while. “Hello Alexander, interesting lesson today don’t you think?”
It was then that their professor addressed Marcus’s slightly obnoxious answer and she was quite sure from the cross tone in her voice that Marcus would be losing more than points if he didn’t keep his trap shut. She listened to her correct him on why the lesson belonged in Transfiguration instead of charms, which should have been obvious even to a second year. But he was one of those worthless ‘puffs so it didn’t surprise her that his knowledge barely excelled that of an eleven year old. What did surprise her was when McGonagall awarded his stupidity with points. Favoritism was nothing new in this school, she had heart tales of the Draco’s first year and how the house cup was unjustly torn from them on the headmaster’s whim for that ragamuffin Potter. Almost every student had a tale of some minor injustice where their work or efforts had been passed over for the mediocrity of another simply because the professor had an unfair bias. Headmaster Snape tried to make up for this while he was teaching but even after all these years it still left a bitter taste in her mouth. What did catch her off guard was how sharp their professor was replying to her. To her knowledge she had not been disrespectful or insulting like Marcus, she had simply taken what knowledge she had given them in the past six years and tried to deduct something from it. But apparently their professor had been less than forthcoming in their previous lessons. Never the less, Christina didn’t let her harsh attitude faze her. Even if she was wrong there was a lesson to learn here and she listened with an open mind and eager spirit. Well I suppose that makes sense. Her interest only grew as McGonagall confessed what the use this lesson could be, in this time of war it was common sense to know a few defense spells. But she preferred to have a keen comprehension of such things because you could never tell when the would come in handy. Her smile faltered for a moment when Draco was called to the front of the class. Her mind had already snapped to the logical conclusion of this little demonstration and it worried her. While Malfoy was skilled in his own right, their professor had years of experience and a talent for this art. Even if most of her friends would love to take a shot at the Gryffindor head of house she knew that McGonagall wouldn’t let it hit her and she knew that when it came to these sort of things, the backlash tended to be embarrassing. She simply hoped that unlike the students she leads, the good professor wouldn’t pull any cheap tricks.

Draco's attention seemed to linger on Christina for a moment, pausing for a second before he turned his gaze back towards Alexander - who had yet to give any indication whether he could 'charm' McGonagall or not. Of course as the thought slipped back into his mind he couldn't help but get an image stuck in his head of the two. She was nearing a hundred and Alex, well he was even younger than Draco. The whole scenario was enough to put a foul taste in one's mouth.
Then, suddenly, McGonagall corrected Marcus, which seemed like she was going to make him look like an idiot in front of the class. Now Draco didn't know the answer either but he knew that seeming to 'correct' her with what subject she was teaching was a big mistake. It seemed as if the professor was going to lose her cool. Then all the sudden she awarded the fools with house points, for failing. Draco's eyes narrowed on the lot in disbelief. Of course when your house was famous for failing I guess when you do it with a bit of style you should get rewarded. His lip started to slip up into a smirk and he turned his head away as if he suddenly lost interest.
Then McGonagall turned to Christina and wasn't too easy on her either. Sure she used the same strict tone that they were used to from her but at least the girl was on the right track. Their had to be something to transfigure. And even though Christina was more or less along the lines of what McGonagall was looking for, well she didn't grant her any house points. Perhaps this was going to be Minerva's silent battle this year, trying to make sure the Slytherins didn't get the house cup... Perhaps just because she felt a grudge towards Snape.
The professor started to speak and Draco turned her way, listening to her words. They seemed to make sense enough, concentrating on something as small as dust but it seemed quiet hard to do, especially on the first try. Was the old buzzard insane?? I mean here she is telling the students that only a hand full of witches and wizards are able to preform such a feat. Did she really think that anyone here was going to be able to do this? Even if Alex is the best in this class he's still too young and inexperienced with a spell of this difficulty. Perhaps McGonagall was just wasting their time, showing them something that no one here was going to be able to accomplish. I mean you can't even see dust floating in the air unless light hits it and at best surely you couldn't concentrate on it enough to transfigure it into, lets say, a large door.
She was looking for guinea pigs and Draco was confident for a moment that the Golden Boy or Marcus was going to be called up. Instead her beady eyes drifted about the room and landed on him, extending her long finger to call him out. And after that initial shock, which lasted a split second, his thinking was along the lines of hers. He was a bit nervous, true, his stomach tying up in slight knots as he stood to his feet seeming more so out of duty then excitement. She explained to him that she would retaliate and already spells were soaring through his mind. He may not be the best when it came to essays and tests but Malfoy could cast a spell rather well.
He followed her, his eyes set on her right now. As they stopped up in the middle of the room he turned down many of his first choices. Drawing his wand he searched for something that seemed 'safe' even to him. If she was going to retaliate he didn't want the spell in any way being bounced back on him. He drew a breath, lifted his wand and in an instant he cast expulso at the witch.

Minerva has no intentions of humiliating Draco in front of the class. Even though she knew that he didn't care for her in particular but she had a place for him in her heart. He had tough choices to make and even though he had the luxury of money and power growing up, he had to grow up to quickly, as much of the children did now a days. She watched him stand, she could tell that he was nervous, but he was very good at hiding it.
He didn't speak the curse he was launching at her, but all the same she was going to block it and retaliate with the means of Transfiguration only. Whatever the curse was he cast it and the old witch responded to quickly. Almost as soon as he flicked his wand she began her defense. In a quick, fluid motion, she moved her wand up and straight, her face was expressionless. A life sized statue of Dolores Umbridge, Minerva's favorite person. She knew the students would understand her choice of Dolores. The statue exploded instantly and before the shards could even hit the ground Minerva quickly thrusted her wand forward transfiguring the stone shards into a flurry of steel needles that stopped in mid air. "Very nice Malfoy," she gasped, "very nice indeed. Nice choice in spells, though if that would have made contact with me..." she quirked her right brow giving him a stern look, "40 points to the Slytherin house for your effort Mr. Malfoy. You may have a seat.
She gave her wand a little swish, the steel needles were gone. "Now, I don't expect you to transfigure something of the magnitude I did-yet. You will, with your groups, Transfigure me a tea cup. Remember, focus, focus, focus! Each and everyone of you can do this, and you will before you leave. I would not teach you this if I knew you could not do it, not many wizards even think of this. Focus, use the wand as an extension of your hand. Materialize it in your head, and it will appear. This will save your life one day." And it had begun, she knew they could do it.

Michael wasn't sure he was looking forward to this lesson at this point. Never having been one for violence, made this lesson more awkward than he had hoped. Watching the professor though, in all her wisdom and quick wit. She was one fo the bravest people Michael had ever had the pleasure of knowing. He tried to watch the professor's movements, go over them again and again in his mind. The soft-fluid motion, the readiness. How he dreamed of doing such. michael had always been a defensive fighter. Many were the days of dueling club when people would be offended, not because he always won, but because by the end of the club meeting, any of Michael's opponents had suffered a symptom much like one would of having the Weasly brothers treats.
He let out a sigh and rose his arm for a moment, trying to get McGonagalls' attention, if only for a moment. He realized it was sheepish, and she would more than likely be upset with him but he couldn't stop the words from pouring from his mouth,"Professor? I realize the lesson is for that of offense and defense, but is it possible that i just focus on defense, I after all believe full-heartedly my partner wouldn't mind in the least barraging me with dangerous and harmful spells" He chuckled softly and gave his queasy smile at the teacher. She hopefully wouldn't mind, having known Michael for so long, in fact, all the times that they had talked she had never a malicious word to say.

The class was going on in a rather boring fashion so far with nothing but talking and more talking going on. Transfiguration was handy, sure, it could help you in a duel, if you did nothing but hide and run from your opponent (sort of the way Michael did in every one of his school duels). A side glance to her partner for the moment and Yulia sighed. She had been denied dueling Michael for obvious reasons in the past and while he somehow seemed to win duel after duel, Yulia still was not impressed. He lacked the heart to cast the big spells and to go for the throat when the moment called. "Idiot," Yulia said under her breath as she sighed, keeping the comment mostly to herself as her dark eyes drifted to Draco as he made his way to the front of the class. Draco would no doubt love hexing the professor and to be honest, Yulia would have loved it as well.
Christina was looking as delicate as ever and while she once again had snagged Draco as a partner, Yulia sort of let it go. Draco was just another fun time for Yulia and judging by the way Christina looked at him, she was dreaming of the big house with white picket fence cliche. That was fine with Yulia, just as long as Christina knew that the Slytherin Prince would need someone a bit more....willing, to do the things which a young man liked Draco deserved and things which someone like Yulia could only offer.
Leaning forward, her head resting in the palm of her hand, Yulia watched Draco ready himself for this little demonstration which McGonagall had been droning on and on about. The spell was cast and McGonagall answered, transfiguring a statue of Umbridge to be destroyed in her place. Yulia's eyes went wide and she had to give the old witch props, it was quite impressive. Of course, this moment was quickly urinated on by Michael Toft's ignorance and cowardice. "Full heartedly?," Yulia asked with a slight cackle as she sat up fully now, her eyes drifting to Michael, "You've barely got enough heart to push your blood through that bloated body of yours," she added, careless about what McGonagall would think of her little joke, after all, Snape was the real power around here, not some dried up and useless old witch.

Nervous tension grew in her shoulders and along her back as she watched Draco stand to do their professors bidding. She hated this feeling, that nagging sense of worry that was mostly unneeded. McGonagall would never let Draco get hurt in her class, as that would reflect badly on the old harpy. But after the incident with mad eye a few years back she had never really regained her trust in the staff, suspicion was second nature to her now. She watched as he silently fired off his curse and McGonagall quickly created, no, transfigured a statue of Umbridge to block the spell. Christina remembered her too… the dumpy, toad like woman who wore her saccharine manner like a shield. She honestly hadn’t been that bad, there were some minor annoyances with the many, many rules she had put up and rumors of a slightly sadistic underbelly. But she had left slytherin well enough alone, so she had no ill wishes against the woman. Their professor however, obviously harbored a grudge. The statue explodes upon impact with the curse and shards began to fly out like, transforming into steel needles. She inhaled sharply from reflex, half expecting the shrapnel to hit them before their professor froze the metal spines mid-flight. Still hanging in the air as if they were part of some warped mobile. She could only imagine the havoc that would cause in battle, the kind of damage this would do was staggering. Yet she couldn’t help but wonder… the shards were spreading out across the room in every direction. If this was used in a battle wasn’t there a very good chance that your allies could be wounded, if not killed as well as your opponent? It seemed a little sloppy to her… but then again there was a reason why she was a student and not a teacher. There may be some logic she didn’t see behind the spell, or something McGonagall didn’t feel needed to be explained to the class. Still, she was going to take note of that little trick and perhaps file it away for later. If she could get the hang of this. Malfoy was even rewarded with some well earned praise and a few house points for his work, though she secretly thought it would have been worth the loss of the points to see McGonagall hit by that curse. Not that she’d admit that in the middle of her class, she’d wait until they were safely back in the commons room. “Skilled work as usual Draco. If this keeps up we may just win the house cup.” Listening to the rest of their professor’s speech, she nodded and took her wand out of her pocket. It seemed that today’s lesson would be special indeed, considering how she stressed the importance of this skill. Stating their very lives were at risk if they didn’t know it. Christina only hoped she could master this talent, though it was doubtful. Transfiguration had never been her best class but perhaps with Alexander and Draco’s help she’d manage. “So… should we all go at once or do you wish to take turns?”

Zachary sat in the back of the class, blearily watching the other students interact, and listening with half-an-ear to McGonagall's speech and Marcus's reply. Honestly, charms created a construct tied to magic, easily dispelled by Finite Incantatum or other canceling spells. Transfiguration rearranged the basic structure of existing objects and then pinned it there. To counter Transfiguration, you needed another Transfiguration spell, or else you just had to wait until the Transfiguration canceled. Zachary yawned behind his hand. He had spent a great deal of yesterday night writing down his thoughts on the changes that had been made in the school. Professor Snape as Headmaster and Professor Mortchiva as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher were the two biggest changes. They shifted the power balance among the teachers to Slytherin. Zachary sighed and focused back onto the lesson. Zachary frowned at Yulia's blunt insult. Rather daring of her to be so blunt in front McGonagall. Almost...Gryfindorish. Zachary smirked inwardly at how Yulia would react if she heard that thought. Probably she would return an equally biting diatribe. Zachary watched with interest McGonagall's statue-spine trick. While those spines would be rather useless if you were fighting with allies, the change had been rather abrupt with barely any wand movement from McGonagall. That could be a useful skill, transfiguring a "conjured" object. Zachary glanced at those nearby, hoping to grab a partner, as he had been too distracted to find one at the beginning of class.
